FORECASTING

Our scientific team studies the evolution of different climate variables and uses them to develop seasonal & monthly predictions for precipitation, temperature and Harmattan conditions. We also carry out year-round monitoring of ENSO and ITF movements.

Our in-house modelling helps us analyse the effects these climate variables have on cocoa plant development and production. We regularly share our commentary in the form of Climate42 Reports.

FORECASTING

Our scientific team studies the evolution of different climate variables and uses them to develop seasonal & monthly predictions for precipitation, temperature and Harmattan conditions. We also carry out year-round monitoring of ENSO and ITF movements.

Our in-house modelling helps us understand/analyse the effects these climate variables have on cocoa plant development and production. We regularly share our commentary in the form of Climate42 Reports.

MONITORING

We monitor a full suite of climate variables on multiple time scales, including precipitation, air humidity, temperature, soil moisture…

We combine these to create research-based agro-climatic indices which we use to produce Hydric Stress reports, Black Pod Risk alerts and cocoa specific Harmattan index that monitors how production and plant development is being affected.

FIELD REPORT ANALYSIS

Our team uses its scientific insight to combine up-to-date information gathered from field reports with our in-house climate analyses in order to provide in-depth commentary on the crop development.

Our Reports

Clients of Climate42 receive regular reports, analyses, observations, commentaries and forecasts.

These reports are tailored to our in-house Cocoa Climate Calendar and highlight the climate conditions having the highest impact during each of the most important stages of cocoa plant and pod development.

No one likes an information flood. We manage the information flow so that you get the most relevant and timely information which will help you make better informed decisions.

Each membership comes with a free Starter Pack which helps you get the most out of understanding the different impacts climate has on cocoa crop development.

THE

CLIMATE42

TEAM

Research Department

Our team has spent many years in the interdisciplinary research combining Climate Science and Agronomy- and focuses specifically on the West African cocoa belt. We combine state of the art scientific knowledge with active research to create operational products and highly informed commentary.

Climate Research

• In-house observational data inter-comparisons across wide range of data types (in situ, satellite, blended, reanalysis) to make the best selection of data sources for climate monitoring

• Capacity-building for accurate soil moisture data retrieval that fills a major gap in observational data over the cocoa-producing regions

• Development, evaluation and improvement of seasonal predictions of climate variables relevant to cocoa in order to develop robust information on the seasonal predictability of climate anomalies that could affect the cocoa crops

Agronomic Research

 • Field experiments and mechanistic modelling to, for example:

-provide new insights into cacao tree physiology and a refined understanding of its response to climate forcings,

-create cacao-specific agro-climatic indices that synthesize the existing knowledge on the response of cacao physiology to the climate

• Studies of disease incidence, development and dependence on climatic conditions in order to create in-house indices of climatic threat of disease outbreaks

Our trusted collaborators

We are also proud to participate in large-scale international research efforts dedicated to a sustainable cocoa production:
